Taking place on November 11 each year, Veterans Day honors those who served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces. Veterans risked their lives to defend our nation’s freedoms, and many are currently facing serious health problems like mesothelioma as a result of their service.

In honor of Veterans Day 2025, learn how you can support brave veterans with mesothelioma as well as all who served.

Veterans Day 2025 Explained

Veterans Day is a time to celebrate those who made the heroic choice to enlist in the U.S. military and defend their country.

The holiday’s date coincides with the end of World War I, which formally concluded on November 11, 1918. Unlike Memorial Day — which honors those who have died while serving — Veterans Day celebrates all living U.S. military members.

On Veterans Day, it’s important to highlight the sacrifices that military service members made. While many veterans are still with us today, they may be suffering from service-related health problems. This includes mesothelioma, a rare and fatal form of cancer only caused by asbestos exposure.

Veterans & Mesothelioma Risks

Between the 1930s and 1980s, the military relied on asbestos for building materials. Service members didn’t know asbestos could cause cancer. As a result, U.S. veterans make up one-third of all mesothelioma cases.

The makers of asbestos-containing products intentionally hid the dangers in an effort to increase profits. Once the truth was publicly revealed, the U.S. military took steps to remove asbestos from bases, vehicles, and Navy ships. However, the damage had already been done since thousands of service members and their families had been exposed to asbestos.

Veterans Day is a great time to remind veterans with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases that you care about them, are proud of their service, and understand their ongoing health battles.

“I would tell people diagnosed with this cancer to make the best of it. You can’t change it. Get as close to your family and friends as you can. Stay positive and keep a positive attitude.”

Art Putt, U.S. Army and Air Force veteran and mesothelioma survivor

3 Ways to Honor Service Members on Veterans Day 2025

There are a number of ways you can celebrate Veterans Day this year, from large-scale events to one-on-one activities with the veterans in your life. Explore 3 ways to get involved this year below.

1. Visit a Veteran

Veterans Day can be a great time to visit the veterans you love. A surprise visit from a relative can make all the difference to a veteran, especially if they are facing mesothelioma or another serious illness.

If you can’t visit them in person, call them up on the phone or schedule a video chat through FaceTime, Zoom, or another online platform.

2. Make a Donation

Donating to a veterans organization or cancer research foundation is a great way to honor veterans who have passed away.

You can make donations to:

  • Disabled American Veterans: This nonprofit organization helps veterans access benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), gives them rides to VA hospitals if they live far away, and offers additional support.
  • Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation: More commonly known as the Meso Foundation, this group aims to find a cure for mesothelioma and support those affected by this rare cancer. Some of the world’s top mesothelioma doctors serve on the organization’s board of directors.
  • Wounded Warrior Project: This organization supports veterans who served on or after September 11, 2001. Through the Wounded Warrior Project, veterans can get help accessing VA benefits, connect with others who served, and receive support for their mental and physical health.

3. Participate in Veterans Day Events

There are thousands of local and national events planned for Veterans Day in 2025. Check your local newspaper, community web sites, or veterans organizations to see what activities are scheduled in your area.

Veterans Day is often celebrated with:

  • 5K walks and races
  • Ceremonies
  • Parades

If you live near Arlington, Virginia, consider attending the Veterans Day National Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. This year’s ceremony will take place on November 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m ET.

The event is open to the public and includes a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations, a military flyover, and speeches from dignitaries and other guests.

Help for Veterans With Mesothelioma

Veterans Day is a reminder that all who served in the U.S. military deserve our respect and praise. Whether you attend an in-person ceremony, simply thank a veteran, or host a gathering to celebrate, make sure you take time out of your day to make them feel honored and respected.

In addition, if you’ve developed mesothelioma as a result of your service in the U.S. military, it’s important to know that you may be entitled to VA benefits and financial compensation.

Our Patient Advocates can help you learn more about mesothelioma veterans benefits and explore all your options for compensation.

A mesothelioma diagnosis can leave former service members and their families facing many difficult questions about treatments, financial support, and where to turn for help.

Many veterans with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos during their time in the military without realizing the risks, only to get sick decades later.

We spoke with Brian Cooke, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and mesothelioma military lawyer at Simmons Hanly Conroy, who helps veterans access the answers and resources they need to move forward after their diagnosis.

In this Q&A, Brian explains why veterans are more at risk for mesothelioma, how VA and legal claims work, and what steps military families can take to secure the help they need.

Why do so many veterans end up with mesothelioma decades after their service?

It really comes down to how the military relied on asbestos for decades. Since asbestos is resistant to heat and fire, it was used throughout ships, bases, aircraft, vehicles — you name it. For most of the 20th century, many people thought asbestos was safe, but we now know that it can cause mesothelioma and other serious diseases.

U.S. Navy veterans tend to have the highest risk because ships were packed with asbestos. It was in insulation, pipes, gaskets, and other parts that crews worked around every day. That said, veterans from every branch could have been exposed to asbestos in some way.

We estimate that veterans make up roughly a third of all mesothelioma cases today. That’s because the cancer takes a long time to develop — sometimes up to 50 years — so people are just now getting sick from exposure that happened decades ago.

How can veterans pay for the cost of mesothelioma treatment?

Veterans actually have a few options to help with mesothelioma treatment costs. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recognizes mesothelioma as a service-connected illness when the asbestos exposure happened during active duty.

Usually, veterans with mesothelioma receive a 100% disability rating from the VA, which can provide monthly disability benefits to help cover the cost of medical care. Veterans can also access free or low-cost treatment at VA cancer centers across the country. Many of these centers work with top mesothelioma specialists.

In addition to VA benefits, veterans can seek legal compensation from companies that made or supplied the asbestos products used during their service. This is usually done by filing a lawsuit. These lawsuits don’t involve the government or the military — they focus on holding negligent companies accountable for exposing service members to asbestos.

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, our mesothelioma law firm is equipped to help you prepare your VA claim and take legal action against asbestos companies, allowing you to focus on your health while we take care of everything else.

What is the average VA compensation for asbestos exposure in 2025?

It depends on your disability rating and family situation, but a veteran with a 100% disability rating can receive over $4,000 a month in tax-free benefits. Veterans who are married or have dependents may get a bit more to help support their families.

These payments can help with medical care and everyday expenses, making sure veterans and their families aren’t left to shoulder the financial burden alone.

Can I file for VA benefits if I don’t remember where I was exposed to asbestos?

Absolutely. That’s one of the most common concerns I hear from veterans. Mesothelioma can take decades to develop, so it’s very common not to remember exactly where or how the exposure happened. You may have worked around asbestos without even realizing it at the time.

My team has access to ship records, base logs, and military product databases that document where asbestos was used and during which years. For example, many Navy ships built before the 1980s contained asbestos in engine rooms, boiler spaces, and insulation.

We can also gather statements from other service members who held similar jobs or served on the same vessels and bases.

By combining that information with your service history, we can determine when and where you came into contact with asbestos. Our team is well-equipped to investigate your exposure and gather the evidence to prove it.

Can I file a mesothelioma lawsuit if I’m already receiving VA benefits?

Yes. VA benefits and mesothelioma lawsuits are completely separate, and many of my clients receive compensation from both.

VA benefits come from the federal government and provide monthly disability payments, health care, and additional support for families. A lawsuit, on the other hand, seeks compensation from the private companies that made or supplied the asbestos materials responsible for your exposure. Filing a lawsuit doesn’t affect your ability to access VA benefits.

For military veterans, these two paths actually complement each other. VA benefits provide a steady monthly income, while legal claims may provide larger payouts to help with treatment and travel costs.

Since many companies used asbestos, veterans often get multiple payments over time, including trust fund payouts from companies that have gone out of business.

How quickly can a veteran begin receiving financial support after filing a claim?

Many veterans may actually start receiving legal compensation within just a few months. The exact payout timeline depends on a few different factors, like the type of claim filed and how quickly we can determine which companies are responsible for their asbestos exposure.

Asbestos trust fund claims usually move a little faster because they’re more straightforward to process. Lawsuits can take a bit longer, especially if several companies are involved, but most cases are settled before even going to court.

My goal is always to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible, ensuring every claim is accurate, well-documented, and positioned to get veterans the support they deserve as quickly as possible.

How would you describe your approach to helping clients as a military mesothelioma lawyer?

As a veteran myself, I know that asking for help doesn’t always come naturally. We’re trained to push through and handle things on our own, so when something as serious as mesothelioma happens, it’s not always clear what to do next.

It’s my job as a veterans mesothelioma lawyer to make things easier for folks during a really difficult time. That means explaining how VA benefits work, helping gather service records to trace where their asbestos exposure happened, or walking them through what to expect from a legal claim.

Every veteran’s story is different, and I take the time to listen to what each person and their family is going through. My clients always have my direct number, and I make sure they know they can reach out anytime. They’re not just another case to me — they’re people I’m here for, day or night.

What do you want newly diagnosed veterans and their families to know?

A mesothelioma diagnosis can turn your world upside down, but my team is available to help anyone who may be struggling.

When you reach out to an attorney, we can review your service records and medical information to pinpoint the sources of your asbestos exposure. It’s important to act quickly, though, as there’s a limited amount of time to take legal action for a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Families should know there’s support for them as well. Mesothelioma caregivers can access VA programs that offer respite care, training, and counseling to help manage the demands of looking after a loved one with mesothelioma.

These services are designed to ease the strain on families and ensure caregivers have the help they need while supporting someone through cancer treatment.

Get Help From Mesothelioma Attorneys Who Understand Veterans

Navigating VA benefits and legal options at the same time can seem overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to focus on treatment. Speaking with an experienced mesothelioma attorney can help clarify your next steps.

Brian Cooke and the team at Simmons Hanly Conroy have helped more than 3,600 veterans with mesothelioma secure compensation.

The firm, founded by a U.S. Army veteran, has recovered over $10.3 billion total for clients nationwide.

If you or a loved one served in the military and was later diagnosed with mesothelioma, help is available.

Call (866) 608-8933 now or request a free case review to learn more. There’s no cost to talk and no obligation to move forward until you’re ready.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has launched a groundbreaking clinical trial called Sentinel, a nationwide effort focused on early cancer detection in U.S. military veterans. This includes veterans with mesothelioma and others exposed to asbestos during their service.

The goal is simple but powerful: to find cancer when it’s most treatable and give those who served our country a better chance at living longer.

“Veterans have sacrificed so much, and we owe it to them to explore every opportunity for early detection and prevention.”
– Dr. Geoffrey Oxnard, lead investigator for the Senintel study

Why Veterans Are at Risk of Cancers Like Mesothelioma

Veterans face unique health challenges long after their service ends. Studies show they are about 20% more likely to develop cancer than the general population.

One major reason is exposure to harmful substances during military service, such as asbestos, burn pit smoke, jet fuel, and other toxic chemicals. For many veterans, especially those who served in the U.S. Navy or worked around ships, asbestos exposure was almost unavoidable.

Asbestos was widely used in ship components like insulation and engines, as well as bases, vehicles, and planes, for decades. Veterans who breathed in or swallowed asbestos fibers could develop mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer, 10 to 50 years later.

By the time mesothelioma and many other cancers are diagnosed, the disease has usually progressed. The Sentinel study aims to change that.

If you or a loved one served in the military and was later diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may qualify for significant VA benefits. Download our Free Veterans Compensation Guide and learn how to access financial support and health care benefits now.

How the Sentinel Study Works

The Sentinel trial uses a simple blood test — called the GRAIL Galleri® multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test — to look for more than 50 different types of cancer.

The GRAIL Galleri MCED blood test detects tiny signals in the blood that may indicate cancer and can often suggest where in the body those signals are coming from.

Find out more about this clinical trial:

  • 1,500 veterans are taking part in the study.
  • Participants must be 45 or older, have 8+ years of active duty service, and have received VA care within the past 5 years.
  • Screenings take place at Dana-Farber or Quest Diagnostics sites.
  • Veterans who test positive will receive follow-up care from Dana-Farber physicians.

Even veterans who test negative will be followed for one year to make sure no early signs were missed. The Department of Defense is also partnering with Dana-Farber to compare outcomes and measure the test’s long-term benefits.

A Mission to Protect Those Who Served

For many veterans, especially those at risk of asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma, early detection could be life-changing. Dana-Farber’s Centers for Early Detection and Interception are leading the effort to focus on prevention and early diagnosis for those at higher risk.

“This research strives to give veterans a fighting chance by detecting cancer earlier,” said Chelsey Simoni, U.S. Army veteran and Chief Health Officer of the HunterSeven Foundation.

If successful, the Sentinel study could make this kind of advanced blood testing a standard tool for veterans everywhere. For older veterans who served decades ago, it may offer peace of mind and an opportunity to catch cancer before symptoms appear.

It’s a reminder that while the effects of asbestos exposure can last a lifetime, medical progress continues to bring new hope.

October 13 marks a major military milestone: the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday. It’s the perfect time to honor the sailors and U.S. veterans who proudly served in the Navy.

Tens of thousands of Navy sailors have given their lives to protect our country. In addition, many older U.S. Navy veterans now suffer from health issues like mesothelioma due to the widespread use of asbestos in the military.

From the 1930s to the early 1980s, the U.S. Navy mandated the use of asbestos products to keep ships fireproof and durable. However, those serving in the Navy and other branches of the military didn’t know asbestos was dangerous, as manufacturers hid the health risks.

Learn more about the U.S. Navy birthday celebrations and how you can support veterans with mesothelioma this October.

Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy: 250 Years of Excellence

The theme for 2025’s Navy Birthday is “250 Years of Defending Freedom, Protecting Prosperity,” highlighting this branch’s crucial role in protecting America’s freedoms since its founding in 1775.

Celebrations of this major milestone have been ongoing throughout the year, with October serving as the culmination, featuring events such as balls, ship tours, parades, and many more.

For this year’s Navy Birthday, we encourage everyone to support the sailors and veterans who chose this dangerous yet rewarding life.

In particular, if you’re a U.S. veteran with mesothelioma, we’re ready to support you. Our team can help you access benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), top treatments, and compensation to cover any expenses.

When is the Navy’s Birthday?

The birthday of the Navy is celebrated on October 13, since this date marks the creation of the Continental Navy.

On October 13, 1775, early in the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress approved the purchase of two ships to attack British supply vessels. The Continental Navy evolved after the war, laying the groundwork for the Navy as we know it today.

“Without a decisive naval force, we can do nothing definitive. And with it, everything honorable and glorious.”
– President George Washington

We observe the U.S. Navy Birthday on October 13 to honor that crucial moment in history and to recognize the sacrifices of all who have served in the Navy since its founding.

How You Can Salute Veterans & Sailors for Navy Birthday 2025

Active duty service members, reservists, veterans, and their families can all participate in the 250th U.S. Navy Birthday festivities this year.

A common way to celebrate is attending a U.S. Navy Birthday Ball. Several Navy Birthday Balls are held at different locations throughout the country, such as Washington, D.C., Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

The Navy Birthday Balls include:

  • Bell ringing
  • Cake cutting
  • Reading of the CNO birthday message
  • Singing of “Anchors Aweigh”

Many Navy Birthday Balls are organized around the first few weeks of October. You can reach out to local military or veterans groups to find a ball or dinner near you.

Find Local Navy Celebrations

The 250th U.S. Navy birthday is a nationwide celebration, with events planned all over the country.

For instance, cities across the country are hosting many activities between October 9th and 15th, 2025, to honor the birthdays of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. These include ceremonies, tours of historic vessels, and a parade of ships.

Other U.S. Navy Birthday events include:

  • Air shows
  • Fitness events
  • Luncheons
  • Navy Band performances
  • Navy Color Guard

Show Your Support on Social Media

Another way to celebrate U.S. Navy Day is to take photos and share them online. A simple post with a Navy hashtag and a photo of your pet or loved one can help raise awareness.

Some hashtags you can use on U.S. Navy Day include #NavyDay, #NavyVeterans, #SupportOurTroops, and #Navy250.

Supporting Navy Veterans With Mesothelioma

Besides the threats of war, many Navy veterans who served decades ago faced a hidden danger: asbestos.

As the only known cause of mesothelioma, asbestos has caused cancer in many who worked with or near it before the early 1980s. Anyone who breathed in or swallowed asbestos fibers released from materials like ship insulation and boilers may have been exposed.

Navy veterans were particularly affected by asbestos exposure. In fact, one in three mesothelioma patients served in the U.S. military.

“I asked them what the material was made out of, and they told me asbestos. Nobody ever said anything about it being dangerous.’”

Walter Twidwell, 20-year U.S. Navy veteran & mesothelioma patient

How Were Navy Veterans Exposed to Asbestos?

The U.S. Navy built its ships, vehicles, and bases with asbestos before the health risks were understood by the general public. Notably, every U.S. Navy ship built between the 1930s and the early 1980s had asbestos-containing materials aboard due to government mandates.

Some Navy ships that used asbestos included:

Manufacturers of asbestos products hid the health risks of asbestos for decades to make huge profits. By the time the dangers became publicly known, thousands of Navy personnel had already been exposed.

While asbestos is no longer used by the military, many older veterans are still in danger today since mesothelioma develops 10-50 years or more after exposure.

Mesothelioma Hope is proud to introduce our new Veterans Advocate, Major Jonathan Nelson (Ret.). With a decorated military career, experience as an attorney, and a personal connection to mesothelioma, Major Nelson is committed to helping veterans and their families access the VA benefits and financial support they deserve.

Introducing Mesothelioma Hope’s New Veterans Advocate

Major Nelson served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Judge Advocate (military lawyer). During his service, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, taught criminal law and trial advocacy at the Naval Justice School, and later served as Staff Judge Advocate for the 2nd Marine Division.

Major Nelson joins Mesothelioma Hope as a Veterans Advocate and VA-accredited attorney. In this role, he provides mesothelioma VA claim help, guiding veterans harmed by asbestos through the disability application process to receive benefits.

“Even though I’m retired from active duty, I’m still looking to help others. Working with Mesothelioma Hope allows me to stand alongside fellow service members and make sure they receive the benefits they’ve earned.”
– Major Nelson, Mesothelioma Hope Veterans Advocate

His combination of military experience, legal expertise, and personal connection to mesothelioma makes him a powerful advocate for veterans navigating one of the hardest battles of their lives.

Download our Free Veterans Compensation Guide to learn how we can help you secure financial support for you and your family.

A Personal and Professional Commitment

For Major Nelson, the fight against mesothelioma is a personal one. His wife’s grandfather, a proud Navy veteran, developed mesothelioma after years of working aboard Navy ships filled with asbestos during World War II.

Like so many sailors of his generation, he was exposed daily through insulation, piping, and engine rooms where asbestos was widely used. That exposure eventually cost him his life.

Major Nelson’s personal commitment is matched by a lifetime of service. Raised in Virginia just across the street from Marine Corps Base Quantico, he grew up surrounded by the military community. His father was an Air Force veteran and a longtime National Park Service ranger.

“My father’s military service and time in the park service instilled in me a love for the United States, so I knew I wanted to serve my country.”
– Major Nelson, Mesothelioma Hope Veterans Advocate

His mother, an English teacher, encouraged his passion for reading and writing, skills that would later prepare him for a career in law and advocacy.

Major Nelson is a retired U.S. Marine Corps major and VA-accredited attorney at Mesothelioma Hope. He helps veterans diagnosed with mesothelioma receive the VA benefits they may be entitled to. View Transcript.

Duration: 1 min 58 sec

My name is Jonathan Nelson. I am a VA-accredited attorney working with Mesothelioma Hope. I am here to help veterans. I wanted to provide for people who had served their country, protected their country, fought in wars on our behalf, and now are diagnosed with a cancer that, for many of them, was caused by their active-duty service itself. I want to make sure that they have the opportunity to get the benefits they need and are entitled to, and to ensure their families are provided for in the future.

I was in the United States Marine Corps for 15 years. I served as a judge advocate and worked as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and instructor at the Naval Justice School. I also handled appellate government law and served as the staff judge advocate for the Second Marine Division in North Carolina for a couple of years.

When a veteran has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, they need to know there’s support for them. We are able to provide medical information, connect them with good doctors and hospitals, and offer mental and spiritual support as well. Companies that have gone bankrupt due to asbestos litigation have paid into trust funds—money set aside for people diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases.

There’s currently over $30 billion available for people who have mesothelioma. This means that if you’ve been diagnosed, you may be able to file a claim for some of that money. We also help veterans file for VA disability benefits and guide them on the right path to make sure their families are cared for, even when they’re no longer able to do so themselves.

I like to help veterans who have fought for our country and served our country. I have a great deal of respect for those individuals, and I’m here to make sure they get the help and benefits they deserve.

Standing Up for Veterans Harmed by Asbestos

Major Nelson believes that supporting veterans with mesothelioma is about accountability. He’s seen how mesothelioma can devastate families and knows this cancer could have been prevented if asbestos companies had acted responsibly.

Asbestos manufacturers and suppliers were aware of the health risks for decades, yet continued to push their products into shipyards, bases, and military housing without warnings or protections. Navy veterans faced the greatest risk since asbestos was present everywhere — in ships, barracks, and even protective gear.

In his role at Mesothelioma Hope, Major Nelson works to ensure that veterans harmed by asbestos get justice. He helps veterans pursue VA benefits and legal compensation to ease the financial strain of mesothelioma and hold negligent asbestos companies accountable.

“I feel like monetary compensation is insufficient for people with mesothelioma, but at least they can secure a better financial future for their families and loved ones.”
– Major Nelson, Mesothelioma Hope Veterans Advocate

Set to open on D-Day of 2026, the new National Memorial of Military Ascent (NMMA) will help to remember, honor, and serve all veterans.

A truly impressive memorial complex, the NMMA will feature an interactive museum, an experience room, and educational resources focused on the events of June 6, 1944 — the day of World War II’s Normandy landings, also known as D-Day.

John Simmons, a U.S. Army veteran and founder of top mesothelioma law firm Simmons Hanly Conroy, is helping to lead this project. As co-chairman of the NMMA, he has pledged to raise $6 million to fund its completion.

“The National Memorial of Military Ascent will be a sanctuary of remembrance and respect, uniting Americans to reflect on the selflessness of those who served.”

John Simmons, U.S. Army veteran and founder of mesothelioma law firm Simmons Hanly Conroy

Learn more about this fascinating memorial, the history it represents, and Simmons Hanly Conroy’s 25+ year commitment to helping U.S. veterans with mesothelioma.

What Will the NMMA Include?

When finished, the NMMA complex will have multiple ways for people to learn more about key points in American military history and to honor veterans.

It will feature an awe-inspiring centerpiece showing bronze statues of U.S. Army Rangers scaling the cliff towards the Mississippi River. This represents the service members who scaled the Pointe du Hoc cliffs while under enemy fire on D-Day in 1944.

Visitors will have access to an interactive museum with a room that recreates the sights and sounds of what those rangers went through during their perilous climb.

The NMMA complex will also include educational resources, ceremonial sites, and spots for reflection.

Many of our nation’s veterans were exposed to asbestos while serving in the military, putting them at risk of cancers like mesothelioma. If you have mesothelioma, you may qualify for financial support. Download our Free Veterans Compensation Guide to learn more.

John Simmons: Honoring Veterans Through Advocacy and Action

While John Simmons is playing a key role in funding the NMMA complex, it’s far from his first experience with helping veterans.

As a U.S. Army veteran himself, Simmons has been fighting for veterans with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases for over 25 years.

“I am proud to support this project and to help create a lasting tribute for veterans and their families.”

Simmons Hanly Conroy has a long history of advocating for veterans with mesothelioma and helping them pursue the compensation they need for medical treatments and other expenses.

Pioneering Legal Support for Mesothelioma Veterans

Veterans make up 33% of all mesothelioma cases due to asbestos exposure during their military service.

Asbestos is a hazardous mineral widely used from the 1930s to the 1980s to build ships, vehicles, and other military equipment. U.S. Navy veterans are diagnosed with mesothelioma more frequently than veterans from other branches due to high levels of asbestos on Navy ships.

Mesothelioma Hope has partnered with Simmons Hanly Conroy to help veterans pursue legal settlements and other forms of compensation for asbestos-related diseases The firm has recovered over $10.3 billion for veterans and other mesothelioma victims nationwide.

Together with John Simmons and his team, we’re committed to connecting veterans with the resources they need and the legal support they deserve.

If you’re a U.S. veteran with mesothelioma, you may qualify for many helpful benefits offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), including monthly compensation and free or inexpensive health care.

However, navigating which mesothelioma VA benefits you’re eligible for can be confusing without legal help. In fact, many veterans and families have misconceptions about accessing and using their VA benefits.

Below, we’ll bust 11 common myths about mesothelioma VA benefits and explain how we can help. Give us a call at (866) 608-8933 anytime to learn about filing or increasing your VA benefits after a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Myths About Accessing Mesothelioma VA Benefits

While filing for VA benefits may seem overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. Learn common misbeliefs about mesothelioma VA benefits and how we can make the process simple and stress-free.

Myth #1: Mesothelioma isn’t service-related, so I can’t get VA benefits.

Mesothelioma has been linked to service in all five military branches, particularly the U.S. Navy.

Mesothelioma has a long latency period of 10-50 years or more after asbestos exposure. The VA considers mesothelioma a service-related illness if you come in contact with asbestos while serving, regardless of when you’re diagnosed.

“Any veteran who has mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure while serving in the military is entitled to VA benefits.”

Eric P.W. Hall, Mesothelioma Hope Veterans Advocate

You may not remember when, where, or how you were exposed to asbestos while serving — and that’s okay. The Mesothelioma Hope team can help pinpoint your military asbestos exposure so you can get the VA benefits you deserve.

Myth #2: The VA doesn’t consider mesothelioma a disability.

The VA may consider mesothelioma to be a service-connected disability if your cancer can be linked back to military asbestos exposure.

Married veterans with mesothelioma almost always receive a 100% disability rating. This means they qualify for the highest disability benefits, worth $4,044.91 a month in 2026.

Contact us now to learn if you may be eligible for mesothelioma VA benefits.

Myth #3: I wasn’t honorably discharged, so I don’t qualify for VA benefits.

You may still be eligible for VA benefits even if you weren’t honorably discharged.

The VA typically awards VA benefits to veterans who receive an honorable or general discharge. In some cases, veterans who received a dishonorable discharge could receive benefits, too, depending on what the VA decides.

Myth #4: I need a medical exam to access VA benefits.

The VA typically requires U.S. veterans to get a medical exam, which helps prove whether their condition or illness is related to their military service.

However, if you have mesothelioma, you may not need this exam because this cancer is considered a presumptive service condition.

“VA automatically presumes that certain disabilities were caused by military service. This is because of the unique circumstances of a specific veteran’s military service.”
– U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Myth #5: If I already have VA benefits, I can’t increase them after a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Many U.S. veterans already have VA benefits when they receive a mesothelioma diagnosis. We’ve helped these veterans maximize their VA benefits to get more compensation and lower VA health care copays.

Get our Free Veterans Compensation Guide to see how we can help you file for benefits or increase your disability rating.

Myths About Mesothelioma VA Benefits and Legal Help

Veterans may be eligible to file lawsuits along with VA benefit claims to pursue the most money possible. Some veterans may be wary about seeking mesothelioma legal help, but they don’t have to be.

Learn how filing both VA benefit claims and lawsuits can help you and your family.

Myth #6: Filing a mesothelioma lawsuit will prevent me from getting VA benefits.

VA benefits claims and mesothelioma lawsuits are not connected. Filing a mesothelioma lawsuit does not affect your ability to pursue VA benefits.

In addition, it may be in your best interest to file a mesothelioma lawsuit since you may receive significant compensation. The average lawsuit settlement awards $1 million to $1.4 million in mesothelioma compensation.

Mesothelioma Hope can help eligible veterans seek VA benefits and lawsuit compensation at the same time. Call (866) 608-8933 to learn more.

Myth #7: If I file a mesothelioma lawsuit, I’m suing the military or government.

When you work with our legal partners, your mesothelioma lawsuit will not be filed against the military or government.

Instead, you will be suing the companies that made and sold the asbestos-based products that caused your illness. These companies knew the dangers of asbestos but hid them for decades.

“I didn’t want to sue my government, and I damn sure didn’t want to sue the Navy, because they’re still feeding me. I was suing the manufacturers of asbestos-containing products.

Walter, U.S. Navy veteran with mesothelioma

Lawyers at our partner mesothelioma law firm will handle all the work related to building your case and accessing VA benefits.

Myth #8: A VA-accredited lawyer can’t help me get benefits.

By working with these attorneys, you can:

  • Gather the right documentation for your VA benefits claim

“When I help a veteran apply for VA benefits, I do that at no cost to them.”

Myths About Mesothelioma VA Health Care

A common myth is that the VA’s health care plan isn’t of the same quality as civilian plans. Learn why that isn’t the case and how VA health care can be a big help to veterans with mesothelioma.

Myth #9: VA health care isn’t as good as civilian health care.

VA health care coverage rivals or surpasses the services offered by civilian health care.

Some of the world’s top mesothelioma doctors work at VA hospitals across the country. Because these doctors specifically treat veterans, they deeply understand their medical needs and can create a health care plan specific to your diagnosis.

Myth #10: If I get VA health care, I can only be treated at VA hospitals.

Even if you have VA health care, you may still be able to get mesothelioma treatments from civilian hospitals and doctors.

U.S. veterans don’t have to give up their civilian health insurance if they get VA health care. In fact, the VA encourages veterans to keep private health insurance.

In addition, the VA allows veterans with VA health care to get treatment from community doctors if specific requirements are met. For example, if a veteran needs a medical service that the VA doesn’t provide, then they can access it at a civilian hospital.

Myth #11: VA health care will cost me as much as civilian health care.

It may cost less to get mesothelioma treatments through the VA than through a civilian health care plan.

The VA will cover most, if not all, of the expenses related to a case of service-connected mesothelioma, saving you and your family the worry of paying for treatments.

Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 each year and honors those who served their country. Veterans risk their lives to defend America. Some of them died in the line of duty and others now face serious or deadly health problems like mesothelioma due to their service. Learn how you can honor those who served this Veterans Day.

Veterans Day 2021 Explained

Veterans Day is a time to celebrate those who made the brave choice to enlist in the military and defend the United States of America.

The Nov. 11 date coincides with the end of World War I. Unlike Memorial Day — which honors those that died defending our country — Veterans Day celebrates all U.S. military members.

This Veterans Day, it’s important to keep in mind the sacrifices military service members made. While many veterans are still with us today, they may be suffering from service-related health problems. This includes mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure.

Veterans & Mesothelioma Risks

U.S. veterans account for one out of every three cases of mesothelioma today as the military relied on asbestos between the 1930s and 1980s without knowing its dangers.

The makers of asbestos-based products hid the facts from the military and the general public to keep profits high. The military took steps to remove asbestos from bases, vehicles, and ships once the truth was revealed, but thousands had already been exposed.

Veterans Day can be a great time to remind veterans with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases that you care about them and are proud of their service.

Honoring Service Members on Veterans Day 2021

Whether a veteran you love has died or is still with us, it’s important to honor the sacrifices they have made. Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can celebrate Veterans Day 2021, from large-scale events to one-on-one activities with veterans you love. Find just a few ideas below.

Visit a Veteran

Veterans Day can be a great time to visit the servicemembers you love. A surprise visit from a relative can make all the difference to a veteran, especially if they are facing mesothelioma or another serious illness. Many companies let their employees off for Veterans Day, making it a great time to plan a trip.

Make sure to follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines if you’ll make an in-person visit this year. Older adults and cancer patients are at a higher risk of serious COVID-19 complications. U.S. Army general and former secretary of state Colin Powell died earlier this year from coronavirus while battling cancer.

If you aren’t comfortable making an in-person visit, a phone call or video chat through FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype is a good substitute.

Making a Donation

Making a donation to a veterans organization or cancer research foundation is a great way to honor a veteran who is no longer with us.

You can make donations to:

  • Disabled American Veterans: This nonprofit organization helps veterans access benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), gives them rides to VA hospitals if they live far away, and helps them find jobs.
  • The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation: More commonly known as the Meso Foundation, this group works tirelessly to find a cure for mesothelioma and support those affected. Some of the world’s top mesothelioma doctors are on its board of directors.
  • The Wounded Warrior Project: This organization supports veterans that served on or after Sept.11, 2001. Veterans can get help accessing VA benefits, find support from others who served, and improve their mental and physical health.

Participating in Veterans Day Events

There are thousands of local and national events planned for Veterans Day this year. Check your local newspaper or veterans organizations to see what’s being planned near you.

Veterans Day is often celebrated with:

  • 5K races
  • Ceremonies
  • Parades

If you live near Arlington, Virginia, consider joining the Veterans Day National Ceremony. The ceremony starts on Nov. 11 at 9:00 a.m. and includes laying wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a parade of colors, a military flyover, and speeches from guests.

2021 marks also the first time in almost 100 years that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery has been opened to the public. Civilians can place flowers on the tomb on November 9th and 10th before a private wreath-laying ceremony on Veterans Day that President Biden will attend.

You may also be able to participate in an online Veterans Day celebration in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Celebrate Those Who Served on Veterans Day 2021

Veterans Day is a reminder that all who served in the U.S. military deserve our respect and praise. Whether you attend an in-person ceremony or simply thank a veteran, make sure you take time out of your day to celebrate.

The entire Mesothelioma Hope team is proud to help veterans who have developed mesothelioma after serving their country access military, medical, and financial benefits. On Veterans Day 2021, we humbly thank all U.S. military veterans for their service.

The Supreme Court ordered March 19, 2019 that Navy contractors must warn consumers if replacement parts for their products may contain asbestos, USA Today reports.

The case that sparked the ruling was filed by two Navy veterans and their families. The veterans allegedly developed cancer and died after they were exposed to asbestos products during their service.

The suit was brought against 5 companies that manufactured ship equipment, including:

  • Air & Liquid Systems Corporation
  • CBS
  • Foster Wheeler
  • General Electric
  • Ingersoll Rand

These companies made turbines, propellers, blowers and other mechanisms, according to USA Today. The Insurance Journal notes that this equipment did not contain asbestos-based products.

However, the companies knew that third parties like the Navy could possibly add asbestos components to them later on, specifically to replace damaged parts.

The court ultimately ruled that manufacturers had to warn consumers of possible dangers of asbestos-based replacement parts. The four Democratic members of the Supreme Court were joined by Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts in the decision.

The dissenting Supreme Court Justices said that it would be confusing for manufacturers to warn about products from third parties, USA Today stated.

However, the court ultimately ruled that manufacturers will know what parts may need to be replaced since they made the products in the first place. As a result, the court said that it would not be a burden to warn about the potential dangers of third-party products.

The Navy and Asbestos

According to Supreme Court documents both Navy vets served on ships that contained asbestos products for several years. Kenneth McAfee served on the U.S.S. Wanamassa from 1977 to 1980. He also served on the U.S.S. Commodore from 1982 to 1986. John DeVries served on the U.S.S Turner from 1956 to 1960.

Both McAfee and DeVries claimed that their Navy service exposed them to asbestos and caused them to develop cancer. Neither of them lived to see the final outcome of the case.

Sadly, their claims are not unusual. Asbestos-related diseases are all too common among Navy veterans today.

Asbestos was used by every branch of the military from the 1930s to the late 1970s, and the Navy was no exception. In fact, almost every Navy vessel from the 1930s to the late 1970s contained asbestos parts.

The dangers of asbestos had become a public health concern by the 1980s. However, it still took most of the decade for asbestos products to be removed from all military assets, including Navy ships.

By then, thousands of Navy personnel had already been exposed to the potentially deadly material.

Early Starts and Setbacks

The veterans’ cases had a long history. Initially, the manufacturers argued they were not liable for the illnesses, citing the “bare-metal defense.”

They claimed that their products had been delivered without asbestos-based products — just metal. As a result, they could not be liable if asbestos parts were added later.

This defense initially worked in Pennsylvania state court and on appeal to the Third Circuit Court. However, a second appeal to the Third Circuit noted that the makers of bare-metal products could be held liable if they knew that replacement parts could contain asbestos.

It was at this point the Supreme Court decided to review the case and make a final decision.

A Final Decision

In their verdict, the Supreme Court sided with the veterans but limited the earlier decision from the Third Circuit. The Supreme Court ultimately found that manufacturers are liable for asbestos-caused illnesses stemming from replacement parts.

However, their ruling only extends to maritime law, as the justices found the Third Circuit’s decision too broad. This means it is only helpful for those exposed to asbestos while at sea.

The silver lining is that, since Navy veterans have the greatest risk of asbestos-related diseases, the decision still has the potential to help many victims and their families.

Each year, thousands of Navy veterans are diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases like cancer. These diseases develop without notice over several decades but are very dangerous. Asbestos-caused cancers can be fatal in a year — or less — without treatment.

Treatments for asbestos-caused cancers can be very expensive, but Navy veterans can afford them by filing for VA benefits and filing legal claims. By extending the liability to these additional manufacturers, the Supreme Court has given Navy vets a better chance at getting the money they need for their treatments.

The US Federal government recently announced additional funding for Veteran Affairs benefits and healthcare through the VA Mission Act. Though beneficial for veterans, the VA Mission Act has led to some questions about what this means for veterans with mesothelioma. In this post, we’ll break it down and tell you everything you need to know.

First, it’s important to recognize who is on the hook for exposing veterans to asbestos. The U.S. military cannot be held liable for asbestos exposure, regardless of whether they are at fault. Instead, the liability lies with the manufacturing companies that created and supplied the asbestos-contaminated materials.

VA Benefits Changes

On June 6 2018, the VA Mission Act was signed into law, improving veterans’ ability to access healthcare coverage through their VA benefits. The biggest perk of the VA Mission Act is the creation of the Veterans Community Care Program, which will replace the existing Veterans Choice Program and make it easier for veterans to receive health care.

The Veterans Community Care Program will enable veterans to receive healthcare within their own community when VA hospitals can’t meet their needs. This is particularly important for veterans with mesothelioma who are unable to travel, as they can receive medical attention at their local hospital, even if it isn’t a VA hospital.

A few additional highlights of the VA Mission Act include:

  • Extension of the Veterans Choice Program by one year
  • Expanded veteran eligibility for injury claims
  • Creation of pilot programs that will attempt to make payment and services easier to obtain
  • Fewer restrictions on receiving telemedicine
  • Live transplant operations will now be funded when the donor is not a veteran

All in all, the Mission Act is an extraordinarily positive thing for veterans, improving the quality and availability of care for many people who served their country.

Existing VA Benefits

Veterans Affairs benefits are a veteran’s right. Veterans who have been exposed to asbestos, diagnosed with a resulting disease and are receiving VA benefits, will continue to receive their benefits with the VA Mission Act. In fact, more veterans will now be eligible for benefits resulting from asbestos-related claims.

In order to receive health benefits for asbestos exposure, a veteran must have been:

  • Honorably discharged
  • Exposed to asbestos while in the military service
  • Have a disability or disease due to that asbestos exposure

The Veterans Affairs program looks at asbestos exposure similar to an “on the job” injury. While the military won’t take responsibility for that injury, they will help ensure veterans get medical help as a result.

Mesothelioma is considered a disability and veterans who have been diagnosed with it as a result of their military service will receive monthly payouts from the government. Additional benefits received depend on the details of the claim, but it’s not uncommon for veterans to have some or all of their healthcare costs covered through the program as well.

Veterans With Open or Pending Mesothelioma Cases

The U.S. military cannot be held liable for exposing veterans to asbestos. Instead, veterans must seek legal action from the original manufacturer of the asbestos-containing material that resulted in health consequences.

Fortunately for veterans, the ability to hold a manufacturer liable for asbestos exposure is completely separate from the Veterans Affairs benefits programs. If you or a loved one are seeking legal damages from a company, this action will not be affected by the benefit changes.

You are always entitled to your VA benefits. Even veterans who receive 100% benefits coverage from VA can still get additional payouts from manufacturers.

Pursuing Legal Action as a Veteran

Many veterans choose to pursue legal action as compensation for their pain and suffering and to help support their spouses and dependents in the future. Spouses may get a portion of the VA benefits if a mesothelioma patient dies from mesothelioma, but it might not be enough to support the existing standard of living.

Payouts from manufacturers can help alleviate some of this burden and ensure loved ones are taken care of.
